A Strong Start to the School Year

It’s hard to believe we’ve already completed the first month of school! From the energy in our classrooms to the enthusiasm at school events, it’s clear that this year is off to a fantastic start.
Our students have returned ready to learn, our staff have been working tirelessly to create welcoming and engaging environments, and our families continue to be invaluable partners in education.

Across the district, we’ve seen students diving into new learning experiences, building connections with peers and teachers, and showing great character. We’ve also had successful back-to-school nights, extracurricular activities kicking off, and strong attendance—all signs of a vibrant and committed school community.

Thank you to everyone for helping make this first month such a success. We’re excited for what lies ahead and look forward to continuing this positive momentum throughout the year!

Attendance Awareness Month

🏫The Power of Showing Up: Why Attendance Matters

As we begin another exciting chapter in our school year, we want to take a moment to highlight something that plays a crucial role in every student’s success: consistent school attendance.

Every day a student is present is a day of opportunity — to learn, to connect, and to grow. Research consistently shows that students who attend school regularly are more likely to succeed academically, stay on track for graduation, and develop strong social and emotional skills.

When students miss school, even for understandable reasons, it can quickly add up. Just two days a month equals nearly 10% of the school year — enough to impact learning and achievement.

We’re asking for your partnership to ensure that students come to school every day, on time, and ready to learn. Whether it’s helping establish morning routines, scheduling appointments outside of school hours, or reaching out for support when needed, your involvement makes a difference.

Let’s work together to build strong attendance habits today that lead to a brighter tomorrow.

Meet Our Trustees

Sarah Turner - Vice President, Area 1

Sarah Turner brings nearly three decades of classroom experience to her role as a Santa Rita Union School District Trustee. Having taught every grade from kindergarten through fifth, she continues to be inspired by the many connections she has made with students and families.

One of her most memorable moments as a trustee was speaking at her godchild’s graduation from Gavilan View Middle School, a powerful reminder of the impact education has across generations. Sarah treasures meeting community members who once attended Santa Rita schools and hearing about their favorite teachers and experiences.

Guided by her deep knowledge as an educator and the encouragement of colleagues and friends, she chose to serve on the board to help extend opportunities to even more students. Her hope is to foster programs that ensure every child’s success while creating a school community where families feel connected, valued, and proud to belong.

Cindy Lopez - Board Trustee, Area 2

Cindy Lopez’s connection to the Santa Rita Union School District began as a student at Gavilan View Middle School, where she made lasting memories with friends at school dances, game days, and in the classrooms of caring teachers.

Now, as a trustee and parent, she is motivated by her belief in the power of family involvement in education. Cindy was inspired to join the board after her own children began attending district schools, sparking her desire to help shape a positive, supportive environment for all families. She hopes her role encourages other parents to engage with their children’s learning, knowing that such involvement can make a meaningful difference in student success.

Outside of her service, Cindy dreams of traveling to many destinations on her bucket list—even as she works to overcome a fear of flying! With her passion for parent engagement and community betterment, Cindy looks forward to continuing her work alongside families and staff to support the success of every student.
