Sun Bucks
What are SUN Bucks?
SUN Bucks, also known as Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT), is intended to help families in California buy food during the summer months when school is closed and works just like CalFresh. Children can get SUN Bucks if they qualify for free or reduced-price school meals through a school meal application or Universal Benefits Application, or if they get CalFresh, CalWORKs, and/or Medi-Cal (certified at or below 185% of the Federal Poverty Level [FPL]).
Who is eligible for SUN Bucks?
Children who get CalFresh, CalWORKs, and/or Medi-Cal with income at or below 185% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) will automatically get SUN Bucks. Children who are eligible for free or reduced-price meals at certain schools, based on household income requirements, will also get SUN Bucks automatically.

How to Get SUN Bucks?
If a child is not automatically enrolled in SUN Bucks, they must apply at their school or school administrator’s office by September 2, 2025, to see if they qualify based on household size and income.
- Children who don’t get public assistance and attend a Community Eligibility Provision or Provision 2 school, or who get school meals from California’s Universal Meals Program must apply. Getting free school meals does not guarantee SUN Bucks enrollment.
- Kids who get Medi-Cal will only automatically get SUN Bucks if their family’s income is at or below 185% of the FPL. This means that some children who get Medi-Cal will not automatically get SUN Bucks. Common examples include children receiving Supplemental Security Income or Adoption Assistance because these families get Medi-Cal that is not certified at or below 185% of the FPL.
Friendly Reminders:
- SUN Bucks expire 122 days after being loaded on the card. Families are encouraged to spend their SUN Bucks before CalFresh benefits. Check your balance details at www.ebtedge.com.
- Update your contact information with your child’s school or school administrator’s office, your local county social services office, or at BenefitsCal.com.
- Report any SUN Bucks card issues to the SUN Bucks Helpline at (877) 328-9677. A family cannot get more than one SUN Bucks card per child, or get SUN Bucks from more than one state.
